Boiler Grant Scheme Extended to 2018

The Government-backed ECO (Energy Companies Obligation) boiler grant scheme is due to be extended until March 2018.

ECO grants were introduced in 2013 as part of drive to improve the carbon footprint of the UK. Old or inefficient gas boilers pump high levels of carbon dioxide into the environment.

ECO provides funding from the major energy companies for free boiler replacement (up to 100%) and home insulation for low income households in England, Scotland & Wales who claim a specific combination of benefits or tax credits, and who’s existing boiler is old or inefficient.

Free boiler grant scheme 2016

Upgrade your central heating boiler for free (UK)

Low income households throughout the United Kingdom can take advantage of  a Government-led scheme called the Energy Companies Obligation (ECO).  ECO is funded by the UK’s major utility companies and is designed to:

  • lower carbon dioxide emissions produced by old and inefficient central heating systems / boilers
  • reduce the cost of domestic energy bills for poorer sections of society including pensioners, those who receive tax credits and those on specific benefits with younger children.

How does the free boiler scheme work?

Your property

To qualify for a free boiler grant you must be a home owner or tenant. Landlords can apply numerous times via tenants in each individual property. The ECO boiler scheme provides non-repayable boiler grants and subsidised boiler replacements depending on your property type. Larger houses are more likely to qualify for non-repayable grants because the aim of the scheme is to reduce carbon emissions and the carbon savings must be worth the  financial cost of the new boiler installation. For smaller properties such as flats a small customer contribution may be required.

Your income status

Pensioners who claim State Pension Credits and families with young children who claim Child Tax Credits (and whose total household income is under £16010) qualify for a free boiler replacement with no additional qualification components required. Those in receipt of Income Support, Universal Credit, ESA and Working Tax Credits may qualify if they meet additional eligibility requirements. A list of which can be found here - Free boiler grant qualification.

In addition to your property status and income status your boiler must be 8 years old and have an energy rating of  C (85% efficiency) or below.

Since March 2013 nearly one million replacement boilers have been installed free of charge in the UK.

Free Boiler Scheme For landlords

How landlords can benefit from the Government free boiler scheme

If you are a landlord or landlady you may be able to replace any inefficient or broken gas boilers currently installed in your property free of charge thanks to the Government ECO free boiler grant scheme.

The ECO (Energy Companies Obligation) is an environmental program led by the UK Government and funded by the six largest energy companies (British Gas, E.ON, EDF, Scottish Power, SSE & NPower). The scheme is designed to reduce carbon emissions by providing grants to replace inefficient gas boilers.

Boiler grant eligibility

Government legislation states that for any privately rented property it is the tenant who qualifies and not the landlord of a property. That means that if you let out several properties then each may qualify for a free boiler under the scheme depending on the tenants’ circumstances.

Benefits for landlords

  • Any boiler installed via the free scheme will be an A rated boiler which will improve property’s energy efficiency and EPC ratings
  • A new boiler installation can cost around £2000 - £3000 but may be free via the scheme
  • Adds value to your property at point of sale or let

Benefits for tenants

  • A new A rated boiler will have improved functionality and will heat any property more efficiently
  • A reduction in gas / heating bills
