Now is a great time to take advantage of free boiler schemes as there are many designed for different people, the criteria for a free boiler is not just restricted to the elderly but for low-income families too.
Most free boiler schemes are reliant on the Government’s ECO scheme which obligates the larger energy suppliers to provide grants for home energy efficiency measures such as boilers and insulation.
Why act now
There are good reasons why acting now during the summer months will benefit you.
Firstly, summer is not when most people think about changing their boiler, but it is actually a great time to change it. The heating engineers are less busy with boiler breakdowns, so they have more availability and may offer better rates for grant boilers. It is also when you will be least dependant on your boiler, so you will not miss it during its replacement and therefore it is less disruptive to your household.
Secondly, ECO is about to change in October as it moves into a new phase and the criteria are altered. The new criteria has not been fully confirmed yet but the criteria are due to be changed to potentially a smaller target group. There may also be a lower target set on obligated energy suppliers for boiler replacements and repairs. So, if you think you may be eligible for a free boiler under the current ECO scheme criteria you should apply now before the changes come into effect.
Are free boilers for pensioners only?
You do not need to be a pensioner to be eligible for the Government boiler grants. The ECO boiler schemes target households that have a low-income and are likely to be in receipt of benefits. These households will benefit the most from reducing their energy bills. To be eligible you must either own your own home and your boiler must be over 5 years old.
Free boiler scheme Scotland
Generally, most boiler schemes are the same across the whole of the UK but there may be some differences in some parts of the UK. Free boiler schemes in Scotland may vary as the Scottish Government has devolved responsibilities for home energy efficiency and therefore they may offer additional support for some households in that can be accessed as well as the ECO grant.
Free boilers Wales
Wales also has some differences with their own country-specific home energy efficiency programmes and therefore the free boiler schemes in Wales may differ to those in England and Scotland.
Free boilers England
England in comparison is solely reliant on the government’s ECO scheme and there are no other schemes covering the country that are widely available.
Are the boilers free?
Boilers are normally fitted free of charge as part of these schemes. However, in some cases, there may be additional work not covered by the grant, but you will be informed at the survey about this and you will be given the option to make a small contribution. ECO grants are non-re-payable, so you will not have to repay the grant if your circumstances change.
Act now and don’t miss out!
If you think you may be eligible for a free boiler then act now and reap the benefit of installing a boiler during the summer and whilst the criteria is broader.
